News Image

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of William (Bill) George Smith on February 20, 2024 at the age of 85. Bill is survived

by his sons Adam and Nathan, daughter Robyn, grandsons Zack and Aiden, granddaughter Sydnie, and sisters Nancy & Susan, along

with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bill was born on November 24, 1938 in Eastview, Carlton County, Ontario and was raised by his parents in the area now known as

Brockville, Ontario with his two sisters. He met Judy, his beloved wife of over 40 years in Vancouver, British Columbia, and later

started their family there. In 1979, Bill and Judy moved the family to Calgary, Alberta where they lived for over 40 years and called

Bill was a highly respected & sought a?er plumber, by trade, who started in the trade in March 1979. As his career progressed, he was

a licensed Steamfitter, First Class Gasfitter & certified in Plastic Pipe Fusing, working all over the world, which included underwater

demolition and welding, instructing at SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) for a period of time, until he transitioned into

Sales for Sexauer Plumbing & Heating (now Interline) for 30 + years and inducted into the Presidents Club. For a time, he was also a

certified scuba diver and instructor, being a member of the International Association of Turtles in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and a

high-level hockey coach.

In 1994, Bill’s sons started in Little League, sparking his involvement in the organization. He began volunteering that following year

with Sunridge Little League (which amalgamated with Centennial Little League in 2021), coaching, umpiring, and holding various

board positions from Umpire-In-Chief to President within Sunridge Little League. Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting Bill would

immediately know that his passion for kids & baseball was unparalleled. Bill was later elected as District Administrator for Calgary

District 3, a position he held until shortly before his passing. Throughout his 30 years in Little League, Bill helped support and grow

the sport of baseball in Calgary and, with his opinions, hopefully internationally. Bill was awarded the Baseball Alberta Wally Footz

Builders Award in 2005, for outstanding efforts in structure, promotion and development of amateur baseball in Alberta, inducted

into the Little League Hall of Excellence in 2009 and recognized as a Lifetime Member of Little League Alberta as of October 2020.

Bill was known for being an amazing, caring, kind, generous, and humorous person, as evidenced by his crazy stories. He made

anyone he met his friend and touched the lives of all those who knew him. His legacy will live on, and he will be missed but never

forgotten. Bill would like to thank all those who knew him for their friendship, loyalty, and kindness over the years. His presence will

be felt in our hearts forever as he cruises the highways of Heaven.

A celebration of life will be held in the Spring or Summer of 2024, with details to be determined.
